Amarkantak

The documented history of Chanderi goes back to the early 11th century and is a kaleidoscope of movement and activity prompted by its strategic location. On the borders of Malwa and Bundelkhand, the town dominated the trade routes of Central India and was proximate to the arterial route to the ancient ports of Gujarat as well as to Malwa, Mewar, Central India and the Deccan. Consequently, Chanderi became an important military outpost, prized by rulers with power or ambition, and repeatedly experienced the might of men who molded the destiny of Hindustan.

Steeped in the rich history, Chanderi was a celebrated town of Madhya Pradesh from the 11th century. Several movements and activities gave it a significant place in the historical map of India. Sharing its borders with Malwa and Bundelkhand, Chanderi was a major connecting link of trade routes of Central India. It was also conveniently located near the ancient ports of Gujarat as well as to Malwa, Mewar, Central India and the Deccan. As a result it became a centre of military activities and witnessed rivalries among men who shaped the destiny of the country.


Chanderi is a small historical town in Madhya Pradesh. It is gradually making a very important place for itself in the Indian tourism map. There are several Tourist Attractions in Chanderi that are all well worth a visit and attract a large number of tourists each year.

In the 11th century, Chanderi was a strategically important place. It was an important military outpost and also lay in the main trade route. Legend has it that at one point of time Chanderi was so thickly forested that Babur; the Mughal Emperor could trace the fort after searching the depths of the jungle for six months.

An annual fair is held each year in honor of the Jaageshwari Devi and this is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Chanderi. The place is well known for the beautiful Chanderi saris that are in light colors with beautiful golden borders. Make sure that you pick up one when you visit the place.

Koshak Maha

This Mahal was built by Mohammad Khilji of Malwa in 1445 A.D. The palace is divided into four equal parts and is reflective of very good architectural skills.

Parameshwar Tal

This is a tank built by the Bundela Rajput kings. On the bank of this beautiful tank there is a temple and the cenotaphs of three Rajput kings.

The Chanderi Fort

The majestic fort built during the Mughal era at the top of a high hill has a brilliant gateway known as Khooni Darwaza. The Chanderi Fort is located in the small historical town of Chanderi in the Ashoknagar District of Madhya Pradesh. The Chanderi Fort is the most conspicuous monument in this ancient town.

History of the Chanderi Fort

The Chanderi Fort dates back to the Mughal Period. The Muslim rulers took a lot of initiative to construct the fortification walls of the fort. The Mahals within the fort were built by the Bundela chiefs.

Description

This imposing fort is located on top of a hill. The hill is raised at a level of 71 meters above the town. The fortification walls of the Chanderi Fort protect it from outsiders.

The Chanderi Fort is approached through three gates. The first and main gate is well known as the Khooni Darwaza. It has been named because criminals were thrown from the battlements above and their bodies crashed to pieces below. Hawa Paur is the third and highest gate of the Chanderi Fort.

The remnants of the Chanderi Fort include the Hawa Mahal and the Nau Khanda Mahal. Both these buildings were built by the Bundela chiefs.

There is yet another gateway on the south western side of the fort. This queer gate referred to as the Khatti ghatti is 59 meter in length, 12 meter in breadth, 24.6 meter in height. Sloping towers adorn this gate.


By Air

The nearest airports are Gwalior and Bhopal situated at a distance of about 259 and 258 km respectively. For those traveling by air you can take a bus or hire cars from the airports.

By Rail

It is at a distance of about 38 km from Lalitpur and Lalitpur is at a distance of about 90 km from Jhansi. Jhansi is very well connected by rail. It lies in the Delhi-Mumbai-Madras route. A traveler can easily avail of any direct bus from Jhansi after traveling till Jhansi by train.

By Road

Chanderi is well connected by bus to Gwalior, Bhopal, Indore, Shivpuri, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Sanchi and Vidisha.
