Maheshwar was a glorious city at the dawn of Indian civilization when it was Mahishmati, capital of king Kartivarjun. This temple town on the banks of the river Narmada finds mention in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Maheshwar temples and mighty fort-complex stand in quiet beauty, mirrored in the river below.
Today, Maheshwar is also known for its distinctive hand woven saris called Maheshwari.
Also renowned as Mahishmati in the ancient age, Maheshwar was the capital of King Kartivarjun. Situated on the banks of the Narmada River, this ancient city finds relevance in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata.
This ancient city revived its past glory and charm under the shelter of the Holkar Queen of Indore, Rani Ahilyabai. Today it is renowned for its cotton and silk blend handloom saris apart from the temples which still bears the testimony of the by gone age.
Situated south east of Delhi, modern day Khajuraho was a large city of the Chandelas in the ancient age. Legend has it that Hemvati, the daughter of Hemraj, the Royal priest of Kashi, got a son from the Moon God, who came to be known as Chandravarman and became the King of Khajuraho.
Khajuraho was considered to be a seat of religion and learning by the Chandelas and hence this place is the guardian of some of the most exotic temples in the whole of India. Among the 85 original ones only 22 have survived the ravages of time.
