BHOJPUR
Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh combines the scenic beauty, the historicity and the modern urban planning. It is situated on the site of an 11th century city, Bhojapal, founded by Raja Bhoja.

Bhojeshwar Temple
Bhojeshwar Temple also known as Somnath of the East is a beautifully carved and exceptionally well designed temple of Bhojpur, Madhya Pradesh. The temple, is still incomplete not in the sense of beauty and magnificence. The Bhojeshwar Temple is an ideal example of craftsmanship in the 12th century.
Description
The Bhojeshwar Temple is divided into three sections. The exterior has a dimension of 66 feets. The intricately carved dome which too is incomplete and is supported by four richly decorated pillars.The simple doorway has two beautifully carved figures on both the sides. The balconies surrounding the structure are supported by designed brackets and decorated pillars.The sanctum of the temple houses the lignum which is 7 feets tall and 17.8 feets broad. The lignum is placed on a platform with limestone blocks on either side.

Jain Temple
The Jain shrine stands close to the Bhojeshwar temple. This temple has a stone-raising ramp that stands incomplete. There are three figures of the Tirthankaras one, a colossal statue of Mahavira 20 feets high and the other two are of Parswanath. This temple probably belongs to the same period as the Bhojeshwar temple. Bhojpur is a culturally and archeologically rich location in India. It has some magnificent monuments which showcases the craftsmanship of the bygone days.
Description
An incomplete masterpiece yet a marvelous artwork, the Jain Temple has a stone raising rise. The temple houses three figures of the Tirthankaras. The 20 feets tall statue of Mahavira is a special attraction of the Jain Temple in Bhojpur. The other two statues are of Parswanath. The Jain Temple is rectangular in shape.

Cyclopean Dam
The magnificent old dam has been reduced to the ruins. A natural wall of hills enclosed the whole area except for two gaps of 100 yards and 500 yards in width. These were closed by the Mammoth Earthen Dams, faced on both sides with enormous blocks of sandstone. The smaller dam is 44 feets high and 300 feets thick at the base, the larger dam is 24 feets high with a flat top that is 100 feets broad. These embankments held up an area of water of about 250 square miles. This creation is attributed to Raja Bhoj, but other possibilities assign it to an earlier date. There was a huge lake which lay west of Bhojpur now the lake has dried up and what are left till date are the remains of the ancient dams which used to hold the water.
Description
The whole area was surrounded by hills on two sides which acted as a natural wall. The two sides which were not walled was the area chosen to build the dams. The two gaps had a width of 100 yards and 500 yards each. Massive earthen dams were built to close the gaps. Both sides of the dam were made of blocks of sandstone which were fixed without mortar. The smaller dam closing the 100 yards gap is 44 feets
tall, and 300 feets broad while the larger dam closing the 500 yards gap is 24 feets
tall and 100 yards broad.
History
It is known that the massive lake was destroyed by Hoshang Shah of Malwa who broke through the smaller dam. The Gond legend believes that the army of Hoshang Shah took three months to empty the bed of the lake. The bed of the lake even after being emptied was not habitable for more than thirty years.
